Sewer Line Inspection and Repair on Solvay Laterals

A survey here should produce a marked spot on the ground and a method, not an opinion, because the ground around this village already has a documented history to argue from.

Deciding

Spot repair, trenchless or open cut on a Solvay run

Weigh what the recording found against the method being proposed. A single failed joint on a run that still holds its shape is a spot repair, and there is no reason to buy more. A run that has lost shape end to end is a replacement, and the code recognizes replacement by pipe bursting for gravity drainage piping of six inches and smaller, in high density polyethylene of the same nominal size, with a recorded internal camera survey both before and after and the after survey reviewed and approved by the building official before pressure testing. Weigh one more requirement people find out about late: if the work removes an active basement floor drain, a recessed sump and effluent pump has to go in.

  1. Ask for the fault to be marked, not described

A sonde in the camera head lets the position and depth be marked from the surface. That mark is what makes a quote comparable to another quote.

  2. Match the method to the shape of the pipe

Holds shape means spot repair or lining is on the table. Lost shape means replacement, and pipe bursting is the code route that keeps most of the yard.

  3. Abandoned pipe and lost floor drains are line items

A recessed sump and effluent pump is required where a floor drain is eliminated, and old piping left in place must be capped watertight at both ends with penetrations sealed.

The Geddes record, the bursting rules and the sump requirement

The Town of Geddes annex to the 2025 county hazard mitigation plan records that severe storms producing strong winds, hail and heavy rainfall caused flash flooding across the Town, with pavement damage on Grove Road and Yale Avenue, damage to storm sewers on Benham Avenue, sewer backups on Fay Road and flooding on Leslee Terrace. The same annex lists the Lakeside Pump Station at 664 State Fair Boulevard, owned by WEP, as exposed to the 100 and 500 year floods with modeled damage of 13.3 percent to structure and 76.5 percent to contents.

Section P3010 of the New York residential code governs replacement of building sewers and building drains by pipe bursting. It limits the method to gravity drainage piping of 6 inches and smaller, requires the replacement to be the same nominal size, requires high density polyethylene pipe to ASTM F714, requires an internal recorded video camera survey both before and after the work, requires the after survey to be reviewed and approved by the building official before pressure testing, and requires cleanout fittings to be installed where the existing sewer did not have them. Section 3011 sets out the parallel rules for PVC fold and form replacement.

Section 5.5 C of the Examining Board requirements states that when repair or replacement of a building sewer or drain eliminates an active basement floor drain, or where there is no floor drain, a recessed sump and effluent pump must be installed to remove surface and clear water, discharging to daylight or an approved point of disposal. Any abandoned piping left in place must be capped watertight at both ends and any floor or wall penetration made watertight to prevent seepage back into the premises.

What sewer line repair involves

Local Context

Turning a Solvay opinion into a marked spot in the yard

A recorded survey does three things worth paying for: it names the pipe material, it says whether the run still holds its shape, and it puts a sonde-located mark on the ground above the fault so a price is built around real distance. That last one matters especially around Solvay, where the Town of Geddes annex already documents flash flooding that damaged storm sewers on Benham Avenue and produced sewer backups on Fay Road, and lists the Lakeside Pump Station on State Fair Boulevard in the 100 and 500 year floods. Evidence about your own line, in that context, is what separates a repair discussion from a replacement pitch.

Has anyone marked the fault on the ground?

If not, the quote is an estimate. Tell us what was found and we will say what the survey still owes you.

Questions

Questions Solvay owners ask before agreeing to a dig

What should a Solvay camera survey actually give me?

Four things in writing: the pipe material, the condition of the joints and whether the run still holds a round section, any belly holding water, and the distance from the house to the fault with the position marked on the ground above it. Without that last item, two quotes for the same problem are not comparable, because neither of them is pricing a known length of ground.

Can my Solvay lateral be replaced without opening the whole run?

Where the pipe suits it. The New York code has a section governing replacement by pipe bursting, limited to gravity drainage piping of six inches and smaller and requiring high density polyethylene of the same nominal size, with an internal recorded video survey both before and after, the after survey reviewed and approved by the building official before pressure testing, and cleanout fittings installed where the existing sewer did not have them.
