Clogged and Slow Drain Cleaning in Syracuse
Get one slow or blocked fixture running again, and find out whether the fault stops at that fixture or carries on out to the street.

Drain Cleaning quote
Tell us which fixtures are slow and roughly when the house was built. Those two answers decide whether this is a trap, a branch line or the pipe out to the street, and we will put you in front of licensed, insured contractors who establish that before they quote.

What a drain cleaning actually clears
Drain cleaning is work on the branch line serving one fixture: the kitchen sink, a bathroom basin, a tub or shower, the laundry standpipe or a toilet. A cable machine sized to that pipe, or a small jetter where the deposit is grease, goes in through the trap arm, a cleanout or the vent, the blockage comes out, and the line is run with water long enough to prove it is clear. Which fixtures are affected matters more than what the blockage turns out to be, because a branch line is a short piece of pipe inside the house and the sewer lateral under the yard is not. One slow sink is a branch. Every drain in the house running slow at once is the lateral, and nothing done at the sink will reach it.
- Kitchen sink and disposal lines, where cooled grease has narrowed the pipe rather than plugged it
- Bathroom basin, tub and shower drains, including the hair and soap mat that builds at the trap
- Toilets that need the fixture lifted to reach the closet bend, because a cable will not turn that corner
- Laundry standpipes that overflow when the washer pumps out, which is a flow rate problem as often as a blockage
- Basement floor drains, and the dried out trap seal that lets sewer gas up instead of water down
- Small line hydro jetting, which scours a grease coated wall instead of boring a channel through it
- Blocked plumbing vents, which make a drain gurgle and empty slowly with nothing stuck in it at all
- A camera down the branch line where the same fixture has now blocked more than once

What decides how big a drain cleaning gets
Most of these jobs are small. What makes one bigger is rarely the blockage itself, it is how the line has to be reached and how much of the house is affected. These are the things that move it.
How many fixtures are slow
This is the whole triage and it costs nothing to answer. One fixture is a branch line. Two or more on different levels, or a basement floor drain that rises when the washing machine empties, is the lateral. Onondaga County Water Environment Protection names three causes of a basement backup, a blockage in the sewer line, inflow during heavy rainfall, and tree roots infiltrating the pipe, and not one of them is fixed at a sink.
Whether the house has a cleanout, and where
The New York residential code requires a cleanout at the junction of the building drain and the building sewer, or within 10 feet of piping upstream of it, and another wherever the run turns more than 45 degrees. Plenty of houses here predate that. With no cleanout the line is reached through a roof vent or by pulling a fixture off the floor, which is slower on every visit, not just this one.
What has been going down it
The EPA's analysis of sanitary sewer overflows found that of the line blockages reported, the most common cause was buildup of oil and grease, with tree root intrusion second. Grease is the one a household can stop today, and it explains the line that blocks every year in a house with no trees near it. Taking the plug out and leaving the coating on the wall puts you back here.
The age of the house, because it decides the pipe
East Syracuse, Liverpool and Skaneateles villages all have a median build year of 1938, and 51.4 percent of city housing predates 1950. Plastic drain pipe was not in general use then, so the waste lines inside those houses are metal, and a pipe whose inside has gone rough collects the next blockage faster than a smooth one does.
What has to come apart to reach it
A trap under an open cabinet is one job. A tub trap behind tile, a line above a finished basement ceiling, or a toilet that has to come up and go back down on a new seal is another. Say what is in front of the drain when you book, because that is the part that turns an hour into an afternoon.
Whether the property is on public sewer at all
Outside the village, the Town of Marcellus is not a member of the Onondaga County Consolidated Sanitary District, and the county hazard plan records private septic systems on the steep slopes of the northern region of Otisco Lake. Where a house is on septic, a whole house slowdown is a tank and field question before it is a pipe question, and clearing one fixture will not answer it.
Not sure it is only the one drain?
Run the washing machine and watch the basement floor drain. Then tell us what happened.
How a fixture gets cleared
Say which fixtures are slow, and when
One sink or all of them. Only when the washer runs, or all the time. Only in heavy rain, or in dry weather too. Those three answers decide whether this is half an hour at a trap or work on the pipe out to the street, and they are worth giving before anyone is sent.
Find the access point
A cleanout on the branch, the trap arm under the fixture, a roof vent, or the fixture itself. The code puts a cleanout at the junction of the building drain and the building sewer and wherever the run turns more than 45 degrees, so where a house has one, that is where the job starts.
Match the machine to the pipe
A small drum cable belongs in an inch and a half trap arm. A main line machine forced into one does not clear it faster, it damages the fitting. And where the blockage is a grease coating rather than an object, a jetter takes the wall back to the pipe while a cable only bores a hole through it, which is why the same sink is slow again by spring.
Run it, and keep running it
A line is clear when it takes a full basin at full flow without backing up, not when the water first starts to move. This is the step that gets skipped, and it is the difference between a fixed drain and a drain that behaves until the next load of dishes.
Work out where the blockage actually was
If the cable found it within a few feet of the fixture, it was the branch and the job is finished. If it traveled out past the foundation before it hit anything, the fixture was never the problem. That is the lateral, it is different work, and it is a different conversation about who pays for it.
Take the cause out of the routine
WEP's unflushables list is specific: all wipes, baby, personal care and cleaning, plus cotton balls, cotton swabs, dental floss, hair, tissues, paper towels, sanitary products, diapers, cat litter and animal waste. The explanation underneath it is the useful part. Those items collect on soapy build up and on deposits of fats, oils and grease, so it is the grease that makes the rest of it stick.
What drain cleaning looks like

Where this service starts and stops
When you may not need this at all
- If every drain in the house is slow at once, or the basement floor drain rises when the washing machine empties, the fault is past the fixtures. Cleaning a sink will not touch it, and it should not be sold to you as the answer.
- If a drain gurgles and empties slowly with nothing stuck in it, the vent may be blocked rather than the drain. That is a different part of the system and usually a smaller job.
- If the property is in the Onondaga County Consolidated Sanitary District and the whole house is affected, the county will inspect the public side of the line before you pay anyone. WEP describes that side as running from the cleanout or vent pipe in your yard out to the road and into the public sewer, there is no direct charge for the visit, and you do not have to be home. For a City of Syracuse address the same call goes to the City Department of Public Works instead.
- If the house dates from the early 1950s to the early 1970s and the line has collapsed rather than slowed, do not let a cable be the first thing down it. A video scan is how that pipe is identified, and the published warning on it is that inserting a rooter, snake or mechanical cutter may yield clues and may also further damage the pipe. On that house, the camera goes first.
- If the house is on private septic, a slow drain everywhere is a tank and field question first. WEP does not bill a sewer unit charge to a property that is not connected to public sewer, so the tax bill will tell you which one you are.
What is out of scope
- Water supply work. Faucets, valves, shut offs and anything on the pressure side of the plumbing.
- Fixture replacement. Sinks, tubs, toilets and disposals installed as new.
- The sewer lateral out to the street, which is main line work and priced differently.
- Cleaning and disinfecting a basement that has had sewage in it.
- Septic tank pumping, tank repair and leach field work.
- Any pipe found to contain asbestos, which New York regulates separately and which no ordinary plumbing crew may cut.
- Deciding what a homeowners policy will pay. That is between you and the carrier.

What people ask about a slow drain
Every drain in the house is slow. Is that the same job?
No, and it is the distinction worth getting right before anyone is booked. A branch line serves one fixture and is a short run inside the house. The lateral is the single pipe that takes everything out to the public main, and when that narrows every fixture slows at the same time and the lowest opening overflows first, which is usually the basement floor drain. Clearing a sink trap when the lateral is the problem fixes nothing. The test costs nothing: run the washing machine and watch the floor drain.
What actually causes most blockages in a Syracuse house?
Grease, ahead of roots. The EPA's own analysis of sanitary sewer overflows found that of the line blockages reported, the most common cause was buildup of oil and grease, with tree root intrusion the second most important. Onondaga County WEP describes the rest of the mechanism: fats, oils and grease coat the pipe wall, and wipes, cotton swabs, floss, paper towels and hair then catch on the coating. That is why removing the plug and leaving the coating puts you back where you started, and why the drain nobody pours grease down rarely blocks on wipes alone.
Will a bottle of drain opener from the store do it?
It can shift hair and soap sitting in a trap a few inches from the opening. It does not travel far enough, or stay in contact long enough, to take a grease coating off several feet of pipe, and where it fails it leaves a line full of standing caustic for whoever opens the trap next. If you have already poured one in, say so when you book. It changes how the fixture is opened and who has to wear what to open it.
There is no cleanout outside my house. Does that matter?
It matters on every visit, not just this one. The New York residential code requires a cleanout at the junction of the building drain and the building sewer or within 10 feet of piping upstream of it, cleanouts at intervals of no more than 100 feet on building sewers smaller than 8 inches, and one wherever the run changes horizontal direction by more than 45 degrees. A house that predates the requirement has to be entered through a roof vent or by pulling a toilet, which is slower and costlier every single time. Fitting one during the next repair is the cheapest improvement available on a drain.
The drain is not blocked, it just gurgles and smells.
Two usual causes, and neither is an obstruction in the drain. A blocked vent makes the fixture pull air back through the trap as it empties, which is the gurgle, and it can siphon the trap dry, which is the smell. A floor drain that is rarely used evaporates its own trap seal and does the same thing unaided. WEP's advice on basement floor drains that connect to the sanitary sewer goes a step further: one you do not need can be eliminated or redirected, and one you keep can take a plug or a one-way device.
